Espelt Emporda Pla De Gates Negre
ABOUT
ABOUT
Vineyard & Farming – Pla de Gates is a two-hectare amphitheater inside Cap de Creus Natural Park, just three kilometers from the Mediterranean. Seventy-year, head-trained Garnatxa Negra vines dig into decomposed granite and quartz, absorbing sea breezes and Tramuntana winds. Lluïsa Espelt farms organically: no herbicides, sheep for winter mowing, and seaweed teas for nutrition.
Winemaking – 2021 fruit was hand-picked at dawn, destemmed, and fermented on native yeasts in small concrete vats. Gentle pump-overs extracted color and velvet tannin without heaviness. The wine aged 12 months in seasoned 500-L French barrels and concrete eggs, gaining polish without oak flavor. Bottled un-fined, unfiltered, with minimal SO₂.
In the Glass – Medium-bodied, 13 % abv, it bursts with wild strawberry, black raspberry, and plum skin, threaded by rosemary, fennel seed, and cracked pepper. Bright acidity—retained by cool nights—keeps the juicy core lively, while fine, granite-etched tannins drive a long, salty finish that evokes sea spray on warm stone. Enjoy now after a brief decant, or cellar five to seven years for deeper savory notes.
