ABOUT

The 2022 Domaine Rémi Jeanniard Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes is a concentrated yet finely detailed Pinot Noir from old vines rooted in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. Crafted by Domaine Rémi Jeanniard, this cuvée draws from mature parcels that naturally yield lower quantities of intensely flavored fruit. The 2022 vintage in Burgundy offered ripe fruit balanced by healthy acidity, resulting in wines that combine generosity with structure. Vinification is handled with precision to preserve site transparency, while measured oak aging frames the wine without masking its character. Compared to broader regional Burgundy, Morey-Saint-Denis delivers darker fruit, firmer structure, and deeper mineral undertones. This Vieilles Vignes bottling reflects both power and refinement, with strong aging potential.

Domaine Rémi Jeanniard, an estate of modest proportions for a modest man, comes from the plot of land his father split between him and his brother upon retiring in 2003. His first bottling was in 2004. The domaine is located in Morey-St.-Denis, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, with plantings in Morey St. Denis, Gevrey Chambertin, and Chambolle Musigny. Rémi painstakingly tends to his six hectares of vines, with the pride one expects from the heir to a family fortune of old vines. He practices sustainable farming, pruning in Spring to control yields, regularly working the vines to prevent the soil from settling, and refraining from the use of chemical fertilizers. In July, a green harvest is practiced in order to intensify the aroma and richness of the grapes. Grapes are handpicked selectively, and are fermented using only natural yeasts, before being bottled without filtering or fining. He prefers to use very little SO2, choosing instead to preserve the wine’s freshness with carbonic gas, and uses barrels from Central France, the kind he believes best preserve the wine’s delicacy.

TASTING NOTES

Nose
Layered aromas of black cherry, wild raspberry, and red plum are complemented by notes of violet, forest floor, and subtle spice. A faint smoky nuance and mineral edge add complexity.

Palate
Medium to full-bodied, with concentrated red and dark berry fruit supported by firm, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity provides lift, while earthy and savory tones unfold across the mid-palate.

Finish
Long and structured, finishing with lingering cherry, spice, and a stony minerality. The balance of fruit and tannin suggests excellent cellaring capacity.

FOOD PAIRING

Roasted duck or game birds – The wine’s structure and depth complement rich poultry preparations.

Mushroom-based dishes – Earthy flavors mirror the wine’s forest floor notes.

Herb-crusted lamb or pork – Savory herbs align with the wine’s spice and mineral profile.

Aged cheeses – Comté or aged Gruyère balance the tannins and enhance complexity.
